Ordinate Systems Ltd stewards the OrdinateDB project and is the commercial counterparty: hosting, support and services, under contract, with an accountable name on the other side. The historian itself is Apache-2.0 and free. That is the design, not a promotion.
What the company is for
The project belongs to its licence and its specs. The company exists so there is someone to hold to a contract.
OrdinateDB is not ours to own. It is Apache-2.0, governed by public specifications, and it would keep working — and keep being developed — without us. What an open project cannot do on its own is sign a hosting agreement, commit to a support SLA, or take responsibility for a migration cutover. Ordinate Systems Ltd exists to be that accountable, contractable entity.
The split is deliberate and it is load-bearing. Everything the historian is — the archive, the format, the specs, the non-goals — lives on the project side of the line. Everything that needs a counterparty — hosting, SLAs, delivery — lives on ours. One of these outliving the other is a designed-for outcome, and the design is written down. How the project is governed
The bench
Careers spent commissioning, administering and migrating plant historians.
The engineers behind OrdinateDB did not arrive at historians from databases. They arrived from plants: standing up collectors on plant networks, chasing gaps after outages, defending archive sizing decisions, and carrying historian migrations through commissioning weekends. The product is the accumulation of what that work taught.
